Jo’s Weekly Hair Routine
If you’ve been following us for awhile, you 100% know Jo’s hair routine by now. One of our followers stated “it’s a lifestyle, not just a routine” and truer words have never been spoken! If you’re new here, I have a strict Thursday/Sunday hair wash routine. I wash on Thursday nights so my hair will look fresh all weekend and Sunday evenings so I’ll be ready for the work week ahead - makes sense, right? I’ve put together a full playbook on how to minimize washing while keeping your hair lookin’ fresh and clean!
I use to wash my hair every single night back in high school but I started to realize that washing, drying and styling took up way too much time. Like at least an hour each time so maybe a cumulative 7-8 hours a week? To provide more context, for me to wash my hair, brush it, blow dry, and style it immediately after showering probably takes around 1.5 hours or so and I’m most likely breaking a sweat and throwing a fit (it’s truly miserable). That’s just not feasible for me, or anyone, especially when I’m typically running around from workouts to meetings to social activities, etc. I’ve trained my hair so that I only need to wash twice a week, and it’s been an absolutely life saver for me.
I’m sure you’re wondering, “How do you train your hair? Mine gets so greasy after just one day!”
The more we wash our hair, the more our hair naturally produces oils to prevent the hair from being dry. If you avoid washing, you hair will begin to decrease the amount of oil it produces and in turn, allow your hair to not look so greasy without a rinse!
With that said, you definitely have the make it past that hump of feeling like your hair is dirty and not washing it out of habit. It might feel gross and first but seriously power through and fight the urge! One thing that helps tremendously is having the right products and dry shampoo is at the top of the list, so stock up at your local convenience store or order online. My products of choice are Not Your Mothers Haircare Clean Freak, Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo and The Ouai Super Dry Shampoo. I recommend having multiple bottles on hand to keep at home, in your gym bag, in your car, etc. Start off by committing to an extra day more than what you’re use to, and use dry shampoo to get you through.
My Schedule:
Sunday: I wash my hair in the evening, and air dry as much as I can then right before bed, I use the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer for the final few minutes of drying.
Monday: Hair is dry so I quickly style in the morning before work (either straighten or loose curls)
Tuesday: It’s usually still good from the day before but I might style a bit if my hair looks funky from sleeping
Wednesday: Use dry shampoo on styled hair, maybe add in a few curls. IMO, waves and curls mask dirty hair far better than straight hair
Thursday: I like to throw my hair up in a pony with dry shampoo on this day or wear a cute headband. I’ll usually schedule a super sweaty workout on Thursday nights and then I’ll wash my hair as soon as I get home. Similar to Sunday, I will try to let my hair air dry as much as possible and then use the Dyson.
Friday: Style in the morning (I’ll spend a few extra minutes, on Fridays) then I’m ready for work and the weekend ahead!
Saturday: Still good from the day before. If I workout then I’ll just use a tiny bit of dry shampoo. Check out our “Hair” Highlight on IG for reference.
Sunday: I usually will wear a hat this day, then rinse and repeat in the evening!
I workout 4-5 times a week and will try to plan my sweatiest workouts on hair washing days but it doesn’t always go as planned. If I do a sweaty workout on a Tuesday, I will typically just take it out of a pony immediately post workout, then throw in dry shampoo when I get home. I know it may seem gross (I guess it kind of is? Haha) but you need to push yourself to not wash! Seriously. It will get better, I promise.
Lastly, if you’re wondering what you do if your hair is looking very dirty and you’re crunched for time but need it looking clean (ie before an event) then I have a hack for you. Just wash the top third of your hair - we have tutorials of this in our “Hair” highlight as well. I’ve been doing this since college and have taught so many of my friends!
Let me know if you have any questions!

Jo
