Benefits of Cupping Therapy
If you’ve ever wondered what those hickey-like marks are on people’s backs or shoulders — you’re not the only one. Although they take you by surprise at first, they are a tell tale sign that someone has gotten cupping therapy done. Cupping is an ancient form of alternative medicine that involves placing cups (these were glass) on the skin to create a suction to decompress the muscles. The suction lifts the muscle fibers and draws blood to that area to increase blood flow and overall circulation. Hence, the purple spots that you see.
This is a wellness practice that we think is worth the the money! We’ve visited @florafauna.wellness in Costa Mesa, CA (website linked here) since 2019 and cupping is one of the amazing services provided. This practice has a long list of potential benefits, many of which we’ve personally experienced ourselves. Let’s dive in!
CUPPING THERAPY BENEFITS
Improves blood flow + circulation
Relieves muscle tightness
Decreases toxins
Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system
Promotes mobility
Calming + relaxing
THE PROCESS:
You’ll lay face down on the table + oil is applied to the back
Kacie at Flora Fauna Wellness applies two lightly suctioned cups to your back and gently massages using the negative pressure created. This part is my favorite.
She then suctions the cups one by one along your back, and will prioritize any specific areas that need special attention (i.e. I was having rib/lower back pain from the gym and she placed the cups accordingly).
She turns off the lights and then you can chill & zone the f*ck out for 15 minutes or so. I like to pair this with acupuncture to kill two birds with one stone and create maximum relaxation.
Cups are removed and you’re feeling good!
The purple marks took a little over a week to clear up and I noticed immediate relief from lower and side back pain from lifting at the gym. I also had better mobility and performance in workouts!
The results vary per person so make sure to consult with your doctor beforehand.
In terms of how I’ll be incorporating this into my routine, I hope schedule cupping in once a month or so, but will definitely adjust if I'm feeling increased soreness. Many people go more often than this just depends on your needs.
